What Social / Moral Principles do you find compelling and why? How do these principles fit with the personal principles you identified in Blog 2? Do they conflict at all? Do you think you can live according to both? How will you go about doing so? i.e. Prioritize them? Adopt specific ones for specific contexts?
I found the reading that introduces us the concept of social morality very compelling. It tells me that our society is somewhat of a contract because there are so many rules to live by but at the same time natural rights are maintained. I ask how it can be possible for society being a “contract” but at the same time being a chamber of openness and tolerance. It’s not like I promote sociopaths running wild and getting away with murder.
I do not agree with the definition of natural rights. Nowadays everything is becoming a natural right. For example, marriage; marriage is a so called natural right but really it is a contract. If marriage were a natural right then divorce wouldn’t exist. When you marry someone, you are giving up your personal freedoms in exchange for everlasting love thus changing the meaning of your life, who knows you may regret you everlasting partner later on. My faith also tells there are lots of rules to compel with marriage thus creating some conflict. Most importantly government should stay out of it.
I can go on a rant on this but the reading is an absolute beauty of western democracy. I reflect my last reading which tells about the meaning of life because without liberty and equality then your life will be meaningless because the whole world will be like a cocktail of “1984”(yes the book by George Orwell) and Puritanism. Many people have died and fought for what is a progressive society but some are in the brink of crossing the line thus bringing the importance of morals.
Even though I follow my golden rule these readings and such ideas don’t create much strife. I believe in a line that separates all faiths from political ideas since such a combine will strip away the meaning of life as it will bring nothing but oppression.
My faith belief does endorse some forms of freedom and justice but at the same time maintain a good morality but overall, it does not create much of an impact after all. Regarding conlfict, it overall does not cause any and that is because society executes the separation of faith and governement very well, my teaching tells me that i should obey my authorities and pay my taxes.
